FAIRMOUNT Sunday Life at Fairmount
Our service is mostly traditional, with opening announcements, followed by an invitation for prayer requests, and the "Mission Moment" -- a report on Church missions or other activities, or a visit from a community leader. Worship music runs the gamut from classical hymns, organ and choir, to modern energetic spirituals and jazz trumpets. Congregational participation is encouraged. "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord," says the Bible -- and we do! (Click here for a sample.) Kids are invited to the altar for Pastor Mike's personal attention, with the "Story Sunday" moment. The pastor visits with them, tells a story, and offers the kids a basic, simple Christian lesson from it. The children may be invited to sing, act out a Christian story, or interact with the congregation. Then they return to their parents, or (if their parents wish) to the kids' room for play (with a Sunday School teacher or other parent to supervise). The pastor (or visiting clergy) then reads a passage from the Bible, and comments on it, with a thought-provoking sermon -- connecting eternal wisdom with modern life. Occasionally the sermon is provided by a visiting minister, to broaden our perspectives. Usually, Pastor Mike provides the sermon -- in the way of Jesus, with a characteristic mix of gentle warmth and daring challenge. Meditation and music follows. About once a month, Communion is provided for all. ANYone and EVERYone is welcome to participate in Communion, if they wish -- no matter who they are, and regardless of their spiritual condition; Christ's gift was for all. The service closes with a blessing and music -- and we open the adjoining Wells Room for all who would like to visit afterwards. Refreshments are provided by volunteers. Again, ANYone and EVERYone is welcome!
